Core Ideas
An important life principles from the Biomimicry field is ' integrate development with growth'. It contains a nuanced set of ideas that can nevertheless be applied to business developement and specifcally to launching a new venture and all that that entails. A new company isn't just a seed that gets bigger! It must develop new, more complex systems to support its expanding size and operations. Here is a comparison that may be useful. As described further in the 'Example From Nature' section below, a tree gorws both up and out and each serves a specific purpose.
- Roots: The Foundation
Just as a tree's roots provide a stable foundation and absorb nutrients, a small business must establish its core principles and identity early on. This is the initial development that supports all future growth.
- Trunk: The Core Structure
As the tree grows in height, its trunk simultaneously develops in girth and strength with new rings. In a business, this is the process of building scalable, repeatable systems and processes. This development allows for greater operational capacity as the business gets bigger.
- Branches: Expanding the Business
Once the trunk is strong, the tree can extend its branches and leaves, reaching out to new markets and products. This is the stage where the business expands and diversifies.
- Pruning: Strategic Adaptation
A tree must be pruned to remain healthy, strong, and able to bear fruit. Similarly, a business must strategically "prune" itself to focus on what works and cut away what doesn't.
Example From Nature
A tree grows in 2 different ways: primary growth stretches a tree upwards and outwards, while secondary growth bolsters its thickness, strength, and resilience. These ideas can be used to inspire parallel thinking in businesses.
A young tree's primary growth is in height and length, As the tree gets taller (growth), it simultaneously develops a new layer of wood and bark each year in its trunk. This secondary growth is a development that provides structural support and a more robust transport system for water and nutrients, which are critical for the tree's survival at a larger size.
These processes allow trees to grow taller AND stronger, supporting larger structures and more effective water/nutrient transport
By applying the tree analogy, a business owner can understand that growth and development must be intertwined. You can't just get bigger (add more employees or products) without also getting better (developing more robust systems and a stronger core). This integrated approach leads to a more resilient, sustainable, and successful company.

Business Foundations

Core Ideas
Now is when you open your doors to the world. Keep in mind though that sharing broadly isn’t about only shouting the loudest. It’s about pollinating the right fields, nurturing relationships, and letting your work spread through networks that will support and engage your business products or services. Think about how you can spread your ideas widely enough to allow opportunities to take root in different places so that every interaction is planting a seed that may grow into future business. Remember that collaboration is a powerful tool to expands reach. How does an official and public 'launch' increase your legitimacy and help you partner with complementary businesses, wirte guest posts, co-host events, or trade introductions?
Your launch is a big and possibly one of the first big marketing moments. So plan ahead in order to give yourself enough bandwidth to share generously in format (knowledge, stories, samples, insights) in quality (keep it authentic and mission-aligned) and quantity (multi-channel) so that others can carry your message further.
PRACTICAL LAUNCH STEPS
As with any project or initiative, or event, answer the following clearly and be sure to review the 'Connecting with Customers' section in Step 4.
Who are the primamry people, organizations, groups that should be included in your opening announcement or event. Who will benfit from your business products/services and how will you benefit from their prescensce? Be sure to consider launching to specialized networks, not just individuals becasue shared audiences can multiply exposure with less effort.
What type of announcement would be appropriate for your business? An opening party, a live webinar, or some other type of event. Consider how this choice fits with your brand and customers. Consider detailed material choices and be sure they align with your business.
Where will the launch happen? Online, in-person? What steps do you need to take to secure a venue or platforrm? Choose the right mix of sales channels where your audience lives (for example: social media, email, partnerships, events, podcasts, local communities) and review the Business Foundations section in Step 4.
When will the opening happen? Is it dependent on a season? Consider details like the day of the week and time of day and how those meet your clients expectations.
Why. Your launch is a perfect opportunity to re-iterate why customers should be interested in your brand. Also, review (or newly create) a compelling 'origin story' that will help your supporters cross-pollinate your solution. Sharing the origin story at time of launch is an opportinity to clearly illustrate and lean into your motivations for starting the business and how you can help solve a problem or pain point for your customers. Review Step 1 and also see the Resource section below for more info on creating an effective and shareable origin story.
Marketing Direction
Immediatly after an official launch is a great time to amplify your outreach, follow up on any new leads and confirm that any tracking of response and engagement metrics you have set up is up and running. Review Step 6 for more info on analytics & performance tracking systems and techniques.
I.T. Security Recommendation
Newly launched business can be extra vulnerable due to the new volume of things to do and the sense of excitement and hopefulness that accompanies a launch.
As your interactions with customers, vendors, and others in your business ecosystem increase, so does the potential for security breaches. Be sure to monitor all your systems, educate any new employees, and maintain reasonable skepticism when it comes to incoming messages. If it is unsoliticed and especially if it sounds too-good-to-be-true, it probably is.
