Welcome to Step 1. We're glad you are here.

Every business starts as a seed or a vision. You don’t need all the answers, just the right conditions to begin: intention, direction, and commitment.
Step 1. Vision & Purpose
Define Your Business Ideas & Align to Natural Principles

This step focuses on identifying your passions and values, developing your initial business concept and the fundamental problem you want to solve. We'll outline some foundational ideas that will provide a positive environment and conditions for your business to be successful from a variety of viewpoints (not just financial).

Core Ideas
To build a truly sustainable business, align key, foundational decisions with natural and ethical principles by treating nature as a key stakeholder and striving to create conditions conducive to life. Embracing the Triple Bottom Line (People, Planet, and Profit) can help you recognize how social well-being, environmental responsibility, and economic success are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. With a clear impact thesis, your business can define the specific problem it addresses, present a unique solution, and articulate the meaningful outcomes it aims to achieve for people and the planet.
ALIGN TO NATURAL PRINCIPLES
1. Align your business decisions with environmental and ethical principles in order to:
- reduce negative environmental impact
- find ways to create positive environmental impact
- start with 'nature' as a primary business stakeholder
- create conditions that are conducive to life
2. Consider implementing the triple 'P' bottom-line accounting pillars for your business:
People/Social
Planet/Environmental
Profit/Economic
The core idea of the Triple Bottom Line is that these three pillars are not independent but are deeply interconnected. A strong performance in one area can positively influence the others. For example, investing in employee well-being (People) can lead to increased productivity and innovation, boosting profitability (Profit). Similarly, reducing environmental impact (Planet) can lead to cost savings, enhance brand reputation, and attract environmentally conscious customers, all contributing to economic success.
By adopting this framework, businesses aim to create long-term value for all stakeholders, build resilience, reduce risks, and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world. It represents a shift from a sole focus on shareholder value to a broader, more holistic view of corporate responsibility.
IMPACT THESIS
An Impact Thesis for a green business should include the following elements:
The Problem – A specific environmental or social issue your business addresses.
Your Solution – How your product or service directly tackles that issue.
The Outcome – The measurable or meaningful change you aim to create.
Your Advantage – Why your business is uniquely positioned to create that impact.
Structure:
"We address [problem] by [solution], creating [positive outcome] for [beneficiaries/environment]. Our unique approach is [what sets you apart]."
Example:
"Start Green Co. addresses the knwledge gap that new eco-friendly business founders have by creating a guide to integrating both business and nature-positive ideas to empower our learners. Our solution provides an affordable, accessible, flexible, and straightforward way to learn and reference complex information."
Example From Nature
An example from nature of the ability to create conditions for a new idea (new life) to take root is the Arrowgrass. As detailed in this Ask Nature proflie, it creates its own micro ecosystem which allows it to grow while simultaenoulsy nourishing others in its environment https://asknature.org/strategy/arrograss-engineers-marsh-oases/
How can you structure the foundations of your business to contribute to a robust ecosystem that allows for multiple business to grow while meeting the needs of their customers?

Business Foundations

Core Ideas
INTRODUCTION
Every successful business begins with a clear sense of purpose, ie:, its “why.” This core purpose guides decision-making, strengthens resilience, and ensures your offerings align with your goals and values. Crafting a concise, intentional purpose statement helps define who you serve, what you provide, and the deeper impact you aim to create, forming the foundation for meaningful growth.
DEFINE YOUR BUSINESS 'WHY"
Your business begins with why. A strong purpose acts as a compass as it guides decisions and builds resilience. There are many ways for a business to solve customer problems and overcome customer challenges. As you strt to define the core products and services that you will offer, be sure to refer to your main goals, your purpose, your why.
Start with a short, intentioanl, clear, concise Purpose Statement. A one-sentence purpose statement for someone starting a new business should clearly express what the business does, who it serves, and the impact or value it aims to create, ideally reflecting the founder's core motivation.
Formula:
“[Business name] helps [target audience] [solve a problem or achieve a goal] by [offering a product/service], in order to [deeper impact or purpose].”
Example:
"Start Green Co. helps eco-conscious startups learn the critical steps for starting a business in order to accelerate the shift toward a greener economy."
Marketing Direction
A business rooted in purpose connects more deeply with its audience. Your story is part of your strategy. Compelling stories tend to have core elements that enable the audience to connect with it:
- a logical structure (beginning, middle, end)
- be authentic to you and your business
- make an emotional connection
- have a clear purpose
I.T. Security Recommendation
Security isn’t only technology. It can be incorporated into your values from the very beginning to help build trust and protect your customers (and your business). Take a look at the 5 security best practices for small businesses at the partner link below.
At minimum, it is highly recommended to start using a password manager such as Lastpass or Bitwarden. They are typically minimal cost that allow you to start your business with the good habits of:
-creating strong passowrds
-sharing individual passwords securely
